No end in sight yet for Chikungunya

Chikungunya1WILLEMSTAD - The Chikungunya epidemic is still not at its peak. This is according to the Public Health Department (GGD).

The first patient in Curaçao was reported in August. Now, in late November, there are more than 8,000 cases of Chikungunya on the island. And if that is not enough, there are about 1,000 more patients each week.

According to the GGD, people underestimate the impact of the disease until they get it themselves. The only way to curb the epidemic is to reduce the number of breeding sites of mosquito larvae.

There is no vaccine to prevent Chikungunya virus infection or disease. The only way to prevent the virus infection is by avoiding mosquito bites. The mosquitoes that spread the Chikungunya virus bite mostly during the daytime.
