President Trump says relations between the US and the Netherlands ‘better than ever’

Rutte_TrumpWASHINGTON - The relationship between the United States and the Netherlands is "better than ever", according to US President Donald Trump on Monday. He made that statement when welcoming Prime Minister Mark Rutte in the White House. It is Rutte's first visit to Trump.

Trump started almost immediately on international trade, one of the most troubling issues on the agenda of the two. According to the American president, they are "close to closing a few good trade deals". "At least fair trade deals, fair trade deals for our taxpayers, our employees and our farmers." Trump has long complained that free trade sometimes turns out bad for many Americans.

The President referred to the disagreement between the US and the European Union on trade and import duties. The disagreement threatens to end in a trade war. Trump assured that there will soon be talks with the EU and "something positive" will come out.

Rutte precisely pointed out the number of jobs that trade between the US and the Netherlands yields. His goal is "to increase that". He stated that "there are so many opportunities for the US and the Netherlands to do more" to strengthen each other's economy.

The Dutch prime minister arrived at the official residence of the American president just after 2.00 pm. Trump greeted him on arrival and took him to his office, the Oval Office. A small hour has been reserved for the meeting between the two.
