Schotte and Van der Dijs remanded in custody

Court houseWILLEMSTAD - Former Prime Minister and leader of the opposition party MFK, Gerrit Schotte and his life partner, Cicely van der Dijs will be held twice 24 hours. This was determined by the assistant public prosecutor after the two were arrested this morning and interrogated in connection with the criminal investigation 'Babel'.

In the coming days both defendants will be interrogated. Schotte and Van der Dijs are suspected of forgery and money laundering.

If the Public Prosecutor (OM) believes it to be necessary, in the interest of the investigation, for the suspects to be detained for a longer period of time, their detention will be extended with eight days. Schotte and Van der Dijs will then be brought before the magistrate on Thursday or Friday, who will then have to decide whether the detention was lawful or not.

Criminal investigation ‘Babel’

After a complaint was filed ​​for alleged offenses, on September 18, 2012 and October 22, 2012, an investigation was ordered by the Attorney General of Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the BES islands on January 28, 2013. The results of this investigation, in conjunction with information received from abroad, have led to a criminal investigation under the name ‘Babel’, which was ordered by the Attorney General on June 6, 2013. This investigation is conducted under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor and the Investigation Team of Curacao. In addition, they are supported by investigators from the Criminal Investigation Team.

On December 9, 2013 a number of house searches took place, which produced some computers, documents and other data carriers for further investigation.
