Schotte: “Asjes tells merchants their safety is in their own hands”

Schotte_merchantsWILLEMSTAD – According to the leader of the opposition party MFK, Gerrit Schotte, the Prime Minister of Curaçao does not know how to tackle the rising crime wave on the island. His recommendation to the merchants, in a Nation Building meeting, was to get a “Latin American attitude”. “The Prime Minister has advised all merchants to take matters into their own hands and place armed security guards in their stores and their homes. Asjes promised these business owners that the government will grant them firearms licenses soon,” Schotte said.

Schotte believes that this is contradictory to what the coalition parties, with much fanfare, signed, for the second time, a new protocol with the business owners. According to Schotte, it appears now that these business owners must finance their own safety while paying more taxes since January 2013. The population has to pay more taxes while the economy stagnates.

“In 2013, three thousand people lost their jobs, companies closed their doors one after the other and now they are told that they themselves must seek armed people for their protection.”

“Enough is enough,” Schotte said in his press release. He reiterated that while this government is formed based on betrayal and stolen seats, the socio-economic situation will escalate and will soon turn into an uncontrollable climax.
