14 million for school maintenance

BitorinaWILLEMSTAD – According to the Minister of Education, Rubia Bitorina, the Government will invest 14 million guilders in the next 3 years in the maintenance of schools. “For many years this was not done, so I think it is really needed that we pay attention to this issue now,” according to Minister Bitorina.

Bitorina confirms that previous governments did not do anything to maintain the schools on the island, but she added that pointing fingers right now is irrelevant. More important is that there is the possibility of investing in our schools. According to the Minister, if the schools are properly kept it can motivate the students to participate. It will also improve the education on the island.

Bitorina also mentioned that she is happy that money was made available for free education. “The people of Curacao can now see that we all had to go through austerity measures but that the Government is also giving back,” according to the Minister.

The money will be invested through the “Reda Social” (Social Network).  They will be in charge of the project. According to the Minister, this organization has ample experience in this work. The Minister doesn’t know if all school buildings will be fixed in the coming three years, but it’s her hope that most of them will be taken care of by the end of the period.
