‘Afpakteam’ to deprive criminal from assets

Nelson NavarroTHE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - Minister of Security and Justice Ivo has promised that Curaçao will get support in the approach of the so-called high impact crimes (burglaries, robberies and muggings). Also, a so called “Afpakteam” will be set up for the deprivation of criminal assets. Afpakteam can be compared to a Criminal Assets Bureau in the U.S.A.

The Curacao Minister of Justice, Nelson Navarro and his Dutch counterpart, Minister Ivo Opstelten discussed this support today at a meeting in The Hague.

Earlier, Navarro already announced that he would request assistance from the Netherlands to combat serious crime in Curacao. A senior police officer will be made ​​available to assist the Chief of the Police Corps in Curacao. “We need to develop a plan for a specific approach,” Opstelten said. “If necessary, we deploy additional police officers from the Netherlands. This will be temporary. In addition, we will also analyze the effectiveness of the joint effort.”

There are also discussions about the construction of a juvenile detention center in Curacao. Navarro should present a concrete plan for support from the Netherlands in this project. This project should be presented during the Four Country Conference in June of this year.
