Amsterdam and Curacao continue working together

SigningWILLEMSTAD, THE HAGUE - The Prime Minister of Curaçao Mr. Hodge and the mayor of Amsterdam, Mr Van der Laan signed a cooperation agreement in the field of heritage, health , work and training, integrity policy and economics in the context of the extension of the Curacao - Amsterdam cooperation.

End of February 2013 Prime Minister Hodge conducted negotiations with Mayor Van der Laan in connection with the renewal of the agreement between Amsterdam and Curacao. Exactly two months later, the two government officials were able to sign the cooperation agreement while enjoying a piece of cake bearing the arms of Amsterdam and Curaçao. Premier Hodge was accompanied by Minister Plenipotentiary Roy Pieters during the signing.

The government of Curaçao indicated that they would like to continue with the cooperation with Amsterdam. The previous agreement expired in 2011. In the new agreement it specifies that Amsterdam and Curacao would share knowledge and experience in various fields to strengthen each other's governance and civil service. This is done through internships, workshops, brainstorming sessions and courses. Amsterdam sets no financial resources. Curaçao makes people and resources available to implement the cooperation.

Amsterdam and Curacao have a strong bond. In addition to family visits, there are frequent travels back and forth for vacation, study and work. Amsterdam expects to learn from the Curaçao’s experts how the living conditions of people from Curaçao in Amsterdam can become better. With regards to the practical implementation, the municipality of Amsterdam also seeks cooperation with other cities in the Netherlands, the government (including the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science) and Amsterdam organizations such as Arkin. In addition, the city of Amsterdam, with the help of the Department of Work and Income affiliated “Herstelling” Foundation in training young people for work. In mid-May, Mr. Yoeri van der Lugt, Director of “Herstelling” Foundation will be in Curacao for a working visit. His visit will include talks with officials from the Ministry of Social Development, Labour and Welfare.
