Atalita: ‘Asjes should demand an apology from the Dutch Prime Minister Rutte for his racist comment’

Giovanni AtalitaWILLEMSTAD - Vice-Chairman of the opposition party MAN, Mr. Giovanni Atalita indicated that the Prime Minister of Curacao, Ivar Asjes, should demand an apology from the Dutch Prime Minister, Mark Rutte for his racist comment during a press conference on the Nuclear Security Summit.

The Dutch Prime Minister was asked about Saint Nicolas’ black assistance and if he believes that this tradition is racist. The Prime Minister responded that he cannot do anything about this. The name of the assistant is Black Pete, which means that he is black. “It’s an old children’s tradition in the Netherlands and he cannot change anything to it. The tradition does not talk about a green or brown assistant,” Rutte said.

Then Rutte proceeded to make this statement: “I can only say that my friends in the Netherlands Antilles are very happy when they celebrate Sinterklaas, because they do not have to put make up on their faces. If I dress up as Black Pete than it will take days for me to take the makeup off my face.”

Atalita finds this statement shocking and asks for a response from Asjes. The former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte also called on Asjes to protest.
