Community divided on gun permit for MP’s and business owners

gunsWILLEMSTAD – The community is very divided on the question if a members of Parliament and business owner are allowed to carry guns. The group that’s for this measure says that it’s true that the line has been crossed in Curacao. They believe that MP’s should receive more protection for their safety. They referred to what happened to Helmin Wiels.

Those against say that carrying a weapon will bring problems, including for families. They argue that there are way too many guns on the island already. One argument was brought forth that an assailant will always be armed an prepared if they know that a shop keeper carries a gun. The assailant will use his/her gun first.

In Parliament there is a division on this issue. Some MP’s have already requested a permit to carry a weapon. Some argue that carrying a gun promotes more violence in the society. One MP even said that carrying a gun goes against the principles of Christianity.
