Construction of new and modern neighborhood initiated

Wechi (1024x768)WILLEMSTAD – The first concrete step was taken to start the development of a new and modern neighborhood in Curaçao. It took more than 23 years to finally start with the construction of this new neighborhood, which will provide jobs and homes for the people of the island.

The area, which is located right after the Zegu roundabout on the road to the western side of the island before the landfill. Now that the whole process has been approved and initiated, the land will be prepared for the construction. “Roads will have to be laid, electricity and water pipes must be installed before we can actually start with the construction of these homes,” Arthur Con, Director of the Government Housing Foundation (FKP) said during the groundbreaking ceremony yesterday.

The FKP Director spoke about the immense bureaucracy and red tape which kept this project from starting since the 90's. In 1995, the laws were revised and it became clear that the purpose of the area must be changed. Three judges agreed but the FKP still many fought with heart and soul to prevent the development of this area. Con believes that those who oppose this project are simply against the development of the island.

It’s not until 2013 that the FKP received the information that they can continue with the neighborhood project. FKP worked hard to plan this project, which was finished six weeks after it was approved.

The new neighborhood called Wechi will be for those who are more in need of affordable housing. The project will be executed by small contractors who really need jobs right now. It must become a boost for the economy of the island.

Con also invited architects to register to participate in the designing of the houses. One of the requirements for these architects is that they must be modern and think “green”.

“I think Wechi will become a beautiful neighborhood. A true model for this entire region. We will use solar panels to keep electricity costs low. We will plant fruit trees between these houses. This will be possible because of the water recycling system that we will install. It’s a great project,” Arthur Con stated.
