Cooper: “Cabinet-Asjes will stop carnival definitively”

Charles CooperWILLEMSTAD – According to Charles Cooper, MP for the opposition party MAN, all signs indicate that the government headed by Premier Ivar Asjes wants to put a stop to the biggest festival on the island. This is stated in a letter to the Minister of Culture, Irene Dick.

According to Cooper, the government did not give a portion of the proceeds from the sufferance rights to the carnival groups. The government also wanted to change the carnival route.

These are, according to the opposition MP, signs that the government wants to stop the people’s party. Now it appears that the government, two weeks before the opening of the carnival season, has not deposited money in the account of the organizer, Multi Event Organization (MEO), nor the advance, which is normally given.

The MAN faction in parliament wants to know what the reason is that MEO has not received the promised subsidy for the carnival of next year. The carnival elections for the kids and teens parade will be held on January 9, 10 and 11.

The organization needs money to hold these events. This is why the MAN faction asks if Minister Dick is prepared to still pay the advance to MEO this week.
