Curacao is responsible for its own elections

WILLEMSTAD - "The countries within the Kingdom are autonomous and responsible for the orderly and legitimate process of the elections." This responds Minister Liesbeth Spies (Kingdom Relations) on questions of PvdA member Martijn van Dam on irregularities in the elections on Curaçao.

"Curaçao is an autonomous country and responsible for adhering to democratic principles, including the holding of fair elections. Of involvement of the Kingdom is in principle no question, "writes Spies further.

Van Dam wants clarification on rumors that parties buy votes in exchange for money, laptops and Blackberries. Besides this, the PvdA member wants to know how lawful process of the elections in Curaçao will be monitored. Spies emphasizes that Curaçao is responsible for it own supervision. "The Kingdom has no role in monitoring the conduct of elections," said Spies.

Party financing
On the question about the role of the Kingdom on the recommendations of the Commission Rosenmöller on party financing, Spies was clear. "The Commission Rosenmöller has recognized a lack of transparency in party financing ordinance and noted that this could lead to speculation about the origin of the finances of political parties. The report "Do it yourself" recommends an amendment to the ordinance. It is up to the government of Curacao, whether they take on a recommendation, " writes Spies.
