Curaçao Parliament convenes on instruction St. Maarten

Curacao ParliamentWILLEMSTAD – The Parliament of Curaçao has added an additional agenda point to their meeting today. The MPs want to talk to the Prime Minister about the recent issues between the Netherlands and Sint Maarten. Opposition MP, Armin Konket has already voiced his opinion. According to the PAR member, the Netherland, with the recent instruction given to the Governor of Sint Maarten, not only violated the autonomy of the country, as is written in the Constitution, but has also set a dangerous precedent.

According to the PAR MP, if the Minister Plenipotentiary of Curaçao, Marvelyne Wiels was instructed by the Government here in Curaçao to wash her hands in innocence, then the Council of Ministers will not be able to act if the Netherlands instructs the Governor to interfere with the autonomy of Curaçao.

The PAR faction wants to know from the Prime Minister whether he agrees that the use of the Governor by the Netherlands in conflict is with Article 15 of the Rules of Governor, who is intended to only work as an organ of the Kingdom. The faction also wants to know how the Prime Minister interprets the actions of the Netherlands in Sint Maarten.

According to the PAR faction, the appointment of a Minister is a matter of the country and not of the Kingdom. PAR would like to receive the decision of the Kingdom Council of Ministers to see if the Minister Plenipotentiary has voted in this process. The Minister Plenipotentiary of Aruba was instructed to vote against this decision.
