Difficult for students to find jobs after return from the Netherlands

ResearchWILLEMSTAD - Curaçao students who return home after their studies in the Netherlands have a difficulty finding a job in Curaçao. This is according to a study presented to Minister Jeanne Marie Francisca of Social Development, Labor and Welfare (SOAW) yesterday.

The study was conducted by Maartje Groot, Renske Pin and Diego Vasquez VillaSeca. This study was done following an SEI-project on Migration and Integration, at the request of the Ministry of SOAW.

In the research the intentions for remigration were studied. “Here, we looked at the expectations and final choices.” The 800 respondents were Curaçaoans, who, after their high school, left to pursue and education in the Netherlands. They were divided into four research groups: HAVO and VWO exam students, those who were already studying in the Netherlands, the returnees and the group that still need to return to Curaçao.

Most young people indicated they would like to return to Curacao to contribute to their island. However, finding a job after returning remains a stumbling block. According to the researchers, internship opportunities for Curaçao students must be encouraged and access to jobs must be improved on the island.
