Fuss about new firework warehouse

Firework warehouseWILLEMSTAD – A report from the Caribbean Network (Caribisch Netwerk in Dutch) indicates that the Government has not followed the legal procedures to put a new firework warehouse in the Brievengat area. This became clear during an interview with the representative of the environmental organization in Curaçao Defensa Ambiental, Mr. Lloyd Narain.

“This area is a preservation area and the Government simply cannot build here,” Narain said to Caribbean Network. The old firework warehouse was located at the Seru Loraweg. This warehouse exploded in 2012. Four people died because of this explosion.

According to the chairman of Defensa Ambiental the fire department says it is unsafe to place the firework warehouse in a densely populated neighborhood and an industrial area. An attempt by Caribbean Network to get the paperwork from the State via a LOB inspection procedure was to no avail. The government refuses to give full cooperation.
