Government continues its course despite challenges

GovernorWILLEMSTAD - Yesterday was the opening of the new parliamentary year. As is tradition, the Governor of Curaçao, H.E. Mrs. Lucille George-Wout addressed the nation and gave an outline about what the government’s plans are for the new parliamentary year.

The Governor opened her speech by stating that despite enormous challenges, the government of Curaçao is committed to addressing the issues of interest to the country. Cooperation takes place in an interministerial and integral way to make important decisions.

In her speech, the governor extensively discussed the financial and economic challenges that Curaçao faces. The island has now reached a decisive point where more investment than ever has to be made to create new jobs and to provide support to the weaker members of the community, according to the governor. “We have to invest, invest and invest.”

“In addition to the short-term actions, the government is committed to taking fundamental and necessary actions. No actions that offer only a temporary solution, but that also offer a future and perspective to all residents of Curaçao in the long term,” said the governor during her speech. To achieve this, the government has an integral and comprehensive plan to structurally improve the public finances, the procedures and the functioning of the civil service and the economic sectors.

The government looks back on a troubled period, but emphasizes that it is always available to sit around the table, listen and enter into dialogue to come closer together and involve the government as much as possible, according to the governor. “The fundamental principle remains that we can handle each challenge with confidence in each other together and we can convert this into possibilities.”
