Innovation-driven prosperous Curaçao

OCTWILLEMSTAD - Implementation of the systemic innovation to generate growth and prosperity was the focus of Milan Jezic von Gesseneck, OCTA Innovation Team Leader, mission to Curaçao in the week January 22-26. Mr. von Gesseneck held several high-level meetings with members of the Curaçao’s government, business community and key innovation stakeholders to discuss the vital role of systemic innovation in generating employment, economic growth and creating a vibrant and prosperous society. OCTA Innovation is an European Union (EU) funded initiative to propel innovation in the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs).

How to propel innovation? How innovation to interweave in the economy? How to progress in establishing innovation ecosystem? How to develop optimal innovation supporting instruments? How to implement innovation across all sectors? How to enhance true public private partnership? How to secure sustainability? How to establish priorities? How to use opportunities on the most efficient way? How to optimize use of available knowledge and expertise? How to deal with brain drain? How to optimize capacity building via different ways of blended learning? How to deal with lack of capacities? How to protect heritage? How to use and how to protect natural resources? So many questions and issues to progress with.

Curaçao made an excellent job in the period of establishing its innovation strategy. Particularly it was great job of organizing consultations via multiple working groups consultation work for each sector of importance for the economy and the wide society of Curacao. Innovation strategy and policy have been developed afterwards. Currently, Fiona Curie, Innovation Director of Curacao, is making successful progress moving from innovation strategy and policy to the Innovation action plan of Curacao.

Meeting Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath on Friday 26th of January was a great opportunity to talk about the issues of innovation and development, about the National Development Plan, Smart Island, migration, social inclusion and social innovation. Implementation across all sectors including education, capacity building of both human capacity in general and government capacity-building in particular, wide involvement of the population and Curacao people ownership of building their future were discussed. All of these in a larger context of having an innovation-driven prosperous Curaçao.
