Jesus-Leito; ‘Property settlement is to be completed on January 1, 2014’

Zita-Jesus-LeitoWILLEMSTAD – In a letter to the Minister of Finance, the political party PAR asks when the property settlement of the former Netherlands Antilles will take place. According to the member of Parliament for PAR, Zita Jesus Leito, each island of the former Netherlands Antilles had their right on their part of the settlement since the political change on October 10, 2010. The property settlement is supposed to be completed on January 1, 2014.

The parties involved started with the settlement in 2011, but there is still a lot of work to be done. For example, buildings and grounds must be valued and debts must be determined. In addition, government companies should have their financial statements and it must be determined what share the government has in these entities.

The Court of Auditors already indicated in May of this year that the interim report of the Liquidation Committee does not comply with the requirements. This while near the end of this year a proposal for the property settlement of joint assets and debts had to be presented.

Jesus-Leito hopes to receive a response from the Minister as soon as possible. "The Minister has already indicated that he will not be ready by January 1 of next year. That is why we raised this issue quickly because a solution must be presented soon. It is important that the financial statements of all the islands are closed in accordance with the legislation and that has not happened here for years. We are a new country and should therefore have a good start now,” Jesus-Leito said.
