Minister of Education: “54 million for education”

Irene DickWILLEMSTAD - The government issued this year a total of 54 million guilders in the foundations resorting under the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport (OWCS). That is a reduction of just over a quarter of a million guilders compared with the year 2013, this can be derived from the responses given by the Minister of Education, Irene Dick to questions asked by MFK MP, Amerigo Thodé.

Thodé has written letters to all the Ministers requesting information about which foundations received government subsidies. He asked how much subsidy these foundations received in 2013 and 2014 and what the difference between those two years is. Thodé already received a reply from Prime Minister Ivar Asjes. The next to answer is the Minister of Education Irene Dick.

From her reply, it can be concluded that the Ministry of Education will pay a total of 54 million in subsidies in 2014. The highest subsidy goes to the Student Loan Foundation Curaçao (SSC), which receives an annual amount of 19 million guilders. Following is the University of Curaçao (UoC), which receives a total of 13.8 million guilders, then the training institute Feffik with 4.8 million, the National Library (3.9 million) and culture foundation Kas di Kultura (3.5 million).

In her writing the Minister also stated that the amount of 54 million is 253,409 guilders less compared to the year 2013. This decrease consists of a reduction of 27,609.70 for the National Library and 4,200 for Kas di Kultura. An amount of 221,600 guilders is reduced because the teachers’ college APK and the IPSO School Board are no longer operational and thus will not be receiving subsidies.
