Minister of Education: “Nine thousand school dropouts in Curaçao

Irene DickWILLEMSTAD - According to the Minister of Education, Dick Irene there are over nine thousand school dropouts on the island. Of this group of young people, the majority are male. Dick has signed an agreement in cooperation with the schools for a new system in which students receive assistance.

This Minister has signed a protocol called “Yuda Skol, Yuda su Alumno” (help the school help its student), which is a project to improve the education system on the island.

The Minister shocked everyone by saying that there are over nine thousand dropouts here in Curaçao. She also said that this problem is a serious international problem. Minister Dick said that it is important to focus on children ages 0 to 4, because that’s when the problem starts, especially because of the social problems at home.

“We have the privilege of offering free education to our children,” the Minister said during her presentation. “This is something that is not available to every child in other countries.”

The Minister also indicated that the law of mandatory education must be enforced. Curacao also has the mandatory social education, which is for youth ages 18 till 24. So, according to the Minister, there are enough opportunities for education on the island. “The parents must realize that it is their obligation to take their children to school.”

The protocol will help to reduce the school dropout. “We must reduce this number, I know it is possible,” the Minister stressed.
