No compensation abroad with basic health insurance

svb buildingWILLEMSTAD – Former medical consultant of Health Services Bureau, Hans de Haan warns people who have a basic health insurance that medical costs made abroad will not be covered by the insurance.

According to De Haan’s research, the Social Insurance Bank (SVB) will not reimburse the costs made in another country. The SVB also does not provide a guarantee letter to hospitals abroad. Only in an emergency, the SVB will reimburse costs made for a medical treatment.

De Haan recommends anyone with a basic health insurance going on vacation to close abroad a private travel insurance and to properly pay attention to the "fine prints" in the temporary policy.
