No reliable statistics on illegal immigration

Dutch ParliamentTHE HAGUE, WILLEMSTAD - There are no reliable figures on the extent of illegal immigration in the Caribbean in general or for the Dutch Kingdom in particular. This is according to the Dutch Minister of Defense Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert in a letter to the Dutch Parliament.

According to the Minister, the collection of such data is difficult because illegal immigration takes place by land, by air and by sea. Earlier, the Defense Minister was asked what the extent was of smuggling, human trafficking and other forms of illegal immigration in the Caribbean.

“Several international studies show that illegal immigration is a worldwide problem,” Hennis-Plasschaert said. In addition, the Minister said that the local public prosecutors of the islands are closely watching both the maritime border and airports. This has led to several arrests made by the Coast Guard in the past three years.
