Palm: ‘Overwhelming majority of lottery sale is illegal’

de palmWILLEMSTAD - Through an advertisement in the newspapers today, Minister of Economic Development Stanley Palm (Pais) gave a warning to those who are selling lottery tickets illegally for the Wega di Number Kòrsou (Curacao lottery) draw.

According to Palm, who has met with the licensees for the sale of tickets, the illegal sale is taking unprecedented shape.

"According to our figures, lottery is sold legally for about 60 million guilders and illegally 200 million, which is more than three times more. We want to really tackle this problem, also to assist the Fundashon Wega di Number Kòrsou (FWNK) (The Curacao Lottery Foundation) as they are losing income,” the Minister said.

The advertisement is in Dutch, Papiamentu and Chinese. According to Minister Palm, this way he can reach everybody. There are a lot of Chinese minimarkets were lottery is sold illegally. “From our investigation we have come to know that illegal lottery is mostly sold at minimarkets, which are mostly owned by the Chinese people on the island,” Palm indicated.

The FWNK, which receives its revenue from payments made by license holders and also from government subsidy, has shown many times that it is in financial trouble because of the illegal sale of lottery.
