Parliament adopts bill against crime – Government must take action

ParliamentWILLEMSTAD – The Parliament of Curaçao has unanimously adopted a motion which agrees that the government must come up with a national plan against crime among other things. The 21 MPs agreed that the government must act against crime. “Say no to crime!”

Parliament wants the government to introduce a structured multi-year policy to protect the elderly and the young people against crime. It is not clear yet how this should be structured, but the MPs want a report from the government each quarter starting November 2014 on how they are tackling crime.

The responsible minister to execute this motion is Minister of Justice, Nelson Navarro. He was also present during the public meeting of parliament. The Minister emphasized that there is no longer a distinction between good and bad or between decent people and criminals. Starting September 1 of this year, everyone who still has an illegal firearm in their possession is equal and will be treated equally by the law.
