Parliamentary questions about record sulfur emission

Oil Refinery Smoke Over CuracaoWILLEMSTAD - MPs Bram van Ojik (Green) and Wassila Hachchi (D66) have submitted parliamentary questions to Minister Ronald Plasterk (Kingdom Relations) on the burnt barrels with sulfur iron at the oil refinery. This is according to the Clean Environment Foundation Curaçao (SMOC). Last Friday they measured a record sulfur dioxide emission.

According to Henny Cornelia of the department of Safety and Environment of the refinery, the fire has caused the abnormal peak. The waste in the area between the refinery and Nijlweg has caught fire. Between the wastes there were several barrels of sulfur iron.

The MPs indicated that the refinery is harmful to the environment and therefore want the company to be closed as soon as possible. Ojik and Hachchi want to know whether Plasterk is willing to investigate how this could happen.
