Parliamentary questions on inspection public health

ParliamentWILLEMSTAD - When will Curacao get a new Public Health Inspector? This was a question asked by various MPs this morning presented to the Minister of Public Health, Environment and Agriculture, Bernhard "Ben" Whiteman during a parliamentary debate requested by the opposition parties PAR, MAN and independent MP Omayra Leeflang.

During the meeting, the name of Jan Huurman was frequently mentioned. He was the Health Inspector in Curaçao for a period of eight months. Opinions differ greatly over his tenure as inspector.

Some saw him as a hero because he started numerous investigations and denounced many abuses in the health sector; while others could not appreciate his way of acting and especially his desire for publicity.

Some of them, including independent MP, Leeflang, wanted to know from the government what the situation is with some of Huurman’s investigations and also the fraud uncovered by the former inspector.

MP for PAR Zita Jesus-Leito also stressed on the importance of having a permanent Public Health Inspector. She also wanted to know why this vacancy was still not filled. She also criticized the fact that of the 36 staff positions, listed in the business plan of the Public Health Inspectorate, half was not even filled.

MAN MP, Charles Cooper described the course of action taken by Huurman, as “media horny”, was well received by the people. He also wanted to know what happened to the investigations launched by Huurman.
