Parties will cooperate against copper theft

NavarroWILLEMSTAD – The copper theft problem will be addressed with an integrated approach. Justice, the Public Prosecutor, UTS, Aqualectra, Curacao Drydock Company, Refineria Isla (oil refinery) and Curacao Telecommunication Company (UTS) will join to cooperate in the fight against this major problem on the island. A covenant agreement was signed by the parties yesterday.

Remarkable is the mandatory use of surveillance cameras at certain strategic points and linking the impact of the offense on the sentence demanded for copper thieves and money launderers.

The main reasons to join forces is because the copper theft has become a social problem. This has led to multiple problems and the society must be better protected against domestic and foreign perpetrators of copper theft and that preventive and repressive improvement in the current approach are needed.

A committee named ‘Copper and other metal’ be established which should come up with an action plan within three months. The agreements resulting from the action plan will be put into operation.
