‘Political agreement needed for future of refinery’

oil refineryWILLEMSTAD - According to Dito Mendes de Gouveia a political agreement is needed between Curaçao and Venezuela before a solution can come for the future of the oil refinery. So says the former diplomat and former chairman of the board of the refinery to the Dutch newspaper Antilliaans Dagblad.

Despite the fact that Curacao has been knocking on Venezuela’s door since 2007 already to get clarity on the future of the oil refinery, there is still no sign. In the meantime there are talks about a so-called Memorandum of Understanding, an agreement in principle, but it still did not amount to anything yet.

It is clear that the principles of both parties were all along: the refinery should remain open, but there must also be investments made to solve the environmental problems says Mendes de Gouveia . In 2019 the contract with operator PdVSA expires and each day without clarity is a step in the direction of closure of the refinery, says the former diplomat.
