President of Parliament: “Conviction Schotte bad publicity for politics”

William-Millerson-president of parliamentWILLEMSTAD - President of Parliament William Millerson thinks Schotte's verdict is not the best advertisement for politics. He says so in response to the ruling of the Supreme Court. The Court sees no reasons to annul the ruling of the Courts in First Instance and the Court of Appeal.

The verdict in the case against former Prime Minister Gerrit Schotte is therefore final and he will be imprisoned for three years. He is also prohibited to be a candidate for election for parliament for five years. The punishment for his life partner, Cicely van der Dijs, is also difinitive. She has to serve nine months in prison.

Schotte was convicted for bribery, forgery and money laundering both in the court of the first instance and in appeal.

The President of Parliament, William Millerson regrets that the first prime minister of the new country Curaçao has been convicted, but he believes that nobody is above the law.

Although the verdict against Gerrit and Cicely van der Dijs is now irrevocable, the Public Prosecution Department is not taking any action to arrest Gerrit Schotte. That is in accordance with the law, says OM spokesman Norman Serphos.

However, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) must immediately inform the President of Parliament of the judgment of the Supreme Court. That should lead to Schotte’s dismissal from Parliament. The OM spokesman could not say whether the attorney general had already done that or not.
