Quarrel within coalition about carnival route

BalbordaWILLEMSTAD – There is a major fight between the coalition parties about the decision of the Council of Ministers to change the carnival route for next year.

The government, through Minister Earl Balborda, recently announced that carnival will not go through the traditional route next year. It will not pass through main street Otrabanda (Roodeweg and Breedestraat). This was decided in consultation with the police, the fire department, the carnival organization and the harvest festival organization.

The decision comes after a group of experts reviewed the route and voiced their opinion. Reason is the poor and unsafe condition of some buildings along the route, especially the historical monuments.

According to coalition party Pueblo Soberano, Minister Balborda is destroying the biggest party of the island by not letting it go through its traditional route. Even Balborda’s party has come into opposition and is now demanding that the measure be reversed.
