Red Cross: Curacao government does not know what to do with Venezuelan refugees

Henk-Stomp-red-crossWILLEMSTAD - Because no convention has been signed, Venezuelans are not taken care of in Curaçao. The Red Cross thinks that the government does not know what to do. Henk Stomp of the Red Cross understands this, since Curaçao itself is struggling with problems, but believes that Curaçao should be able to accommodate refugees.

In any case, they are not allowed to stay out in the cold, he says.

Director David Beasley of the UN World Food Program says a humanitarian disaster is taking place in Venezuela. According to Beasley, Colombia needs help from the international community to provide food to the more than 1 million refugees from Venezuela. Beasley made the call during a visit to the Colombian border town of Cucuta. Venezuela is in a deep economic crisis, with huge inflation and major food shortages.

According to Stomp, relatively few refugees come into Curacao because the government controls this by checking at the border.
