Salary freeze for Ministers

Curacao Government CenterWILLEMSTAD - The salaries of all ministers will be frozen as of January 1, 2014 for a period of two years.

This means that the salaries will not be indexed for two years. This is according to a decision from the Council of Ministers (RVM) earlier this week.

Besides freezing the salaries, the cabinet also decided to freeze the vacation bonus of ministers for the same two-year period.

According to Minister Etienne van der Horst of Government Policy, Planning and Services, the proposal should be seen as a gesture from the government that the Ministers are also contributing to solve the problems. “The idea is to fix the decision of the Council of Ministers by law,” the Minister said.

The decision of the Council comes after the Pais leader Alex Rosaria had made a gesture to both ministers and parliamentarians to contribute during these difficult times while the island is suffering. He suggested that politicians had to give a good example by sacrificing their benefits.

Rosaria announced that Van der Horst would present at the weekly cabinet meeting proposals for measures which ministers could take.
