Schotte: “The Government is mortgaging our future”

Schotte_merchantsWILLEMSTAD – According to the leader of the opposition party MFK, Gerrit Schotte, the government is using tricks to balance the budget for the year 2014 – 2015. “The government will borrow almost 598,331,100 through bonds to finance the costs in the 2014-2015 budget. They are mortgaging our future,” said the leader of the opposition party in Parliament.

This week the Parliament began treating the 2014-2015 budget of the Government of Curaçao presented last week on Tuesday. According Schotte, in a press release, the government has lied to the people about mismanagement, which supposedly occurred between 2010 and 2012, just to punish the people with austerity measures.

Schotte also indicated that these measures have produced so much money from the people’s pocket that the government has a surplus of 120 million guilders from the year 2013. “They will keep this money hidden, because they need to continue with their measures, especially against the civil servants,” Schotte said.

“They also said that they will deal with the public finances in a responsible manner, but now we see in their budget for 2015, presented to Parliament, that they will borrow money to cover future costs.”

According to Schotte, the government is making fictitious lists, which are supposedly for economic investments, but it looks like this money is to balance the budget. “These are tricks used to fix the numbers and move here and there and borrow money to close gaps.”

“At the end of the day, this government headed by Asjes and his Finance Minister, Jardim will present a policy just like the ones we have seen in the past twenty years, which is to borrow money in an irresponsible manner without investing in the economy. Tax increase will be the only alternative in their program as a mean to increase their income. They will leave this problem for future generations to handle,” Schotte stated.

“They are mortgaging our country and in the year 2018 our national debt will be 2.900 million guilders again.”
