Shell distances itself from problems oil Refinery

ShellWILLEMSTAD – Shell does not feel called to account for the pollution caused by the oil refinery (Isla). The oil company declares that in 1985 they left the refinery in good working condition and well maintained.  Shell says that the current state of affairs is regrettable, but that all the problems around the Isla, since the sale of the refinery in 1985, is the responsibility of the buyer, thus the Government of Curaçao.

In the T.V. broadcast of the Dutch program Zembla the air pollution and the asphalt lake were denounced. According to Shell the asphalt lake residue can be profitably processed into new products. Between 1983 and 1985 a third of the lake was cleansed and processed into fuel. The buyers (Curacao Government) stopped this process, according to Shell.
