Summary proceedings pro bono lawyers against government

lawyerWILLEMSTAD - Lawyers who grant legal aid to people with low income free of charge are preparing a lawsuit against the country of Curaçao. The promised increase in the legal fee has still not been implemented.

There has been great unrest and dissatisfaction within the aforementioned group of lawyers about the low legal fee for years. When the National Ordinance on Addition to Criminal Matters came into force, it was set at 900 guilders on 25 September 1997. When the National Decree on Addition to Criminal Matters came into force in 1997, it was no longer adjusted.

Former Justice Minister Nelson Navarro agreed to address the concerns. The legal fee of 900 guilders would be raised to 1800 guilders to cover the inflation. Then that amount would be increased to 2500 guilders. The first increase should have taken place on January 1, 2017, and the second within two years thereafter.

The pro bono lawyers now want to enforce this in court.
