Talks to break deadlock in coalition

Curacao Government CenterWILLEMSTAD – Representatives of coalition parties Pueblo Soberano (PS) and PAIS will meet to try to break the political impasse within the government on the nomination of a new director for the public company Curacao Refinery (RdK). Representatives of both parties show themselves optimistic about a positive outcome. This is despite the fierce political rhetoric of recent days.

The consultations will take place through the various committees with the parties. They will search for solutions which must guarantee the survival of the coalition. Both parties indicate that this issue will not lead to a cabinet crisis of the fall of the government.

One thing is clear, behind the scenes there is a lot of tension caused by the sharp position adopted by both PAIS and PS in this case.

The Prime Minister, Ivar Asjes called on Rosaria and his party PAIS to respect the decision of the majority of the Council of Ministers. The majority of the Ministers had endorsed the nomination of José van der Wal-Arnemann as the new director for RdK. Pais opposes this nomination and refers to the fact that Van der Wal-Arneman, according to the assessment, is not the best candidate.

If the parties do not come to an agreement after the meeting, according to PAIS, Parliament will have to decide about it.

“It is up to the States to indicate whether they agree with the decision of the Council of Ministers, yes or no,” Rosaria indicated.
