Tax reform proposals to parliament

Minister Jose JardimWILLEMSTAD – The parliament of Curaçao will start treating a bill proposal for a tax reform commencing January 1, 2015. The Minister of Finance, Dr. Jose Jardim speaks of a collective burden, improving purchasing power.

Last week Wednesday, the Council of Ministers, during their weekly meeting, decided that the bill proposal for various tax reforms should not be sent to parliament yet. First, it has to be discussed by the coalition parties.

This meeting took place last Saturday. Conspicuously absent was PNP MP and political leader Humphrey Davelaar. Members of the PNP board were present.

Nevertheless Davelaar was heard on various radio stations where he criticized the proposals. It lacks information about the actual benefit for employees.

Davelaar says that the proposals are put together by technocrats and the politicians have to approve these. He was not going to do this. “The fact that the Council of Minister is what I like to call a get together of some ministers, but I will not name specific names,” Davelaar said.

After the meeting on Saturday, it is expected that the package of proposals will be sent today to parliament. Jardim said in a press release that “with this financial benefit for citizens and the business sector, the government adheres to the promise that was made in early 2013.”
