Teachers and students against plans Minister of Education

Irene DickWILLEMSTAD – More than 400 teachers protested against the plans of Minister of Education, Irene Dick, who recently announced that the government cannot afford to pay tuition for students older than 24 years. This is part of the austerity measures in the government’s efforts to cut spending and balance the budget.

The Minister also claims that students must begin their formal education before they are 21. When they finish the SBO vocational level, they will not be able to transfer to a higher level of education. According to the teachers, these students will be forced to stay at a lower level of education that is if they even get an opportunity to receive an education.

To protest against these measures, the students collected signatures to present to the Minister. The students were able to collect 1600 signatures and presented these to Minister Dick.
