Van der Horst and Dick point fingers at each other

Curacao Government CenterWILLEMSTAD – School teachers and their union Sitek were on strike last Monday and Tuesday to protest against raising the retirement age, elimination of the salary indexation and vacation bonus. There is, however, uncertainty about which Minister is responsible for these planned cuts.

Education Minister, Irene Dick and Minister of Government Policy, Planning and Service, Etienne van der Horst both refer to each other when talking about who is actually responsible to face the union and the teachers.

During a televised interview, Minister Van der Horst said that he is ready to support Mrs. Dick, but clearly indicated that the planned austerity measures are part of Minister Dick’s portfolio and that she’s the one who should negotiate with the union. “It’s her responsibility, not mine,” Van der Horst said.

Minister Irene Dick indicates that the problem is broader and it concerns all civil servants, therefore, the responsibility falls under her colleague, Minister Van der Horst. “This goes beyond the teachers. We are talking about measures to balance the budget, which means that Minister Van der Horst is responsible,” Minister Dick said.

Today the Council of Ministers will meet to provide more clarity on who should be responsible for these measures.
