VBC worried about intimidations by underworld figures

Curacao statisticsWILLEMSTAD - According to the Curacao Business Association (VBC), there are strong indications that suggest that the underworld criminals and gangsters are trying to infiltrate in the upper world and also want to have influence on them. According to the association, the island needs outside help to strengthen its judicial institutes.

The VBC has taken note with great concern of the media reports on the harassment of Ben Whiteman, Minister of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN). He has long been intimidated and threatened. There was also an attempt to assassinate him.

“The VBC condemns these acts strongly because they definitely are not permitted in a democratic state. Such practices do not contribute at all to a healthy and attractive living and investment environment, sustainable economic development and to improve the feeling of safety. On the contrary, if it is normal that a minister is threatened, how is it then for the citizens?”

The VBC states that Curaçao should not fall in the hands of figures from the underworld.

According to the VBC, which urgently appeals to the government authorities, parliamentarians and judicial authorities, to help, in a joint effort, to restore the democratic constitutional order?

“As citizens we can and should strengthen social control.”
