Whiteman: “Curaçao has huge water pollution problem”

WhitemanWILLEMSTAD - The pollution problem with regard to the Curaçao waters is enormous. This is according to Minister Bernard 'Ben' Whiteman (Health, Environment and Nature) during the continuation of a Central Committee of Parliament. According to Whiteman it is currently still safe to eat fish from our waters, but if the contamination problem is not addressed, it will not be so in the long term.

Whiteman presented a troubled situation with regard to the pollution of the waters around Curacao and also the groundwater. He was referring to more sewer and cesspool water that goes directly to the sea.

The government is also guilty, the minister said, who pointed out that the discharge of the sewer system from Brievengat directly flows to the sea. As a result, harmful substances and bacteria end up in the sea. The latter creates more algae affecting the corals around the island.

The Minister indicated that it is still safe to eat fish from the waters of Curaçao but if nothing is done, on the long run, this will not be the case anymore. The meeting was requested by the Minister’s own party, the Pueblo Soberano (PS).
