Featuring Two Films, Including Mexico’s Official Oscar Submission and the Big Winner at the 2024 Morelia International Film Festival 

WILLEMSTAD – On March 13, the Curaçao International Film Festival (CIFF) will host a special preview screening at The Movies Otrobanda. This event marks the official kickoff of the festival’s 11th edition and highlights the strong bond between CIFF and the prestigious Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico. 

Two films will be featured during the preview night: The evening will begin with the short film Buscando un Burro, followed by Sujo, Mexico’s official submission for the Oscars this year and the big winner of multiple Ojo Awards at the 2024 Morelia International Film Festival. 

Sujo, directed by Astrid Rondero and Fernanda Valadez, made a profound impact at Morelia, earning the Ojo Awards for Best Film, Best Direction, and Best Screenplay. The jury praised the film as “meticulously crafted and darkly poetic, with an unusually optimistic and deeply human ending for its protagonist.” 

The short film Buscando un Burro, directed by Juan Vicente Manrique, is a Venezuelan tragicomedy about two firefighters who welcome a donkey as the president—what starts as an innocent joke soon spirals into an unexpected arrest. 

With this double feature, CIFF offers film lovers an exclusive preview of the diverse and high-quality program that will be showcased later this year during the festival, further reinforcing its strong relationship with the Morelia International Film Festival in Mexico. 

This long-standing collaboration will be celebrated this year with the presence of Daniela Michel, General Director of the Morelia International Film Festival, who will attend CIFF as the jury president for the prestigious Yellow Robin Award. The jury will also include Ailsa Anastasia and Sinuhe Oomen. Michel’s visit highlights the importance of cultural exchange and the close connection between both festivals.
