WILLEMSTAD - Nurses at the Curaçao Medical Center (CMC) recently participated in an information session to learn about the support and services offered by Fundashon Alton Paas to people living with spinal cord injuries.

On October 1, nurses from the Neurology and Nephrology departments attended a one-hour presentation led by foundation director Alton Paas and two of his team members. The session aimed to raise awareness among hospital staff about the ongoing assistance available to patients with spinal cord injuries and other neurological conditions after discharge from the hospital.
Improving Quality of Life
During the presentation, the foundation team explained its mission to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities through programs focused on accessibility, inclusion, and community engagement. Topics included accessible transportation, adaptive sports opportunities, and online tools that help patients remain active and connected.
The session emphasized the importance of continuity of care once patients return home. Fundashon Alton Paas provides follow-up support and guidance to help individuals reintegrate into daily life and overcome the challenges of limited mobility or social isolation.
Bridging the Gap After Hospital Care
The presentation prompted lively discussion among the nurses, who asked numerous questions about post-hospital care and rehabilitation. Many were surprised to learn that Curaçao’s accessible transportation services can be used not only for medical appointments but also for social and recreational activities, helping to prevent isolation.
Another topic that drew strong interest was driving after an accident—a question nurses said many of their patients often ask.
Several participants acknowledged that there remains a gap between hospital treatment and reintegration into society. While nurses recognize that recovery continues long after discharge, many patients still face isolation and a lack of information about available community support.
The collaboration between CMC and Fundashon Alton Paas marks an important step toward bridging that gap, ensuring that patients receive not just medical care, but also the long-term support and empowerment needed to rebuild their independence and quality of life.
