New projects for disability and rehabilitation care

WILLEMSTAD - On June 15, the SGR Group, the largest provider of disability and rehabilitation care in Curaçao, received an additional grant of one million guilders. The amount was allocated as 700,000 guilders for aids for the clients of the SGR Group and 300,000 guilders for wheelchairs for children from Arise, a pressure group of parents with children with disabilities.

The 700,000 guilders grant has already been well utilized. The urgently needed aids, such as adapted wheelchairs and shower seats, have been purchased and received from abroad, allowing clients of the SGR Group to now have the tools that facilitate their daily lives and promote their independence.

However, for the children of Arise, the 300,000 guilders grant is no longer necessary, as the need for wheelchairs for this group has been met through a contribution from the AVBZ fund of the SVB.

The remaining amount of 300,000 guilders will now be allocated to two new projects that will reach an even larger group of clients. This reallocation will benefit a covered space at Kas Richard Pieternella and a Music Hall, accessible to all clients of the SGR Group.

Kas Richard Pieternella

A significant number of clients of the SGR Group receive their daytime activities at Kas Richard Pieternella. Unfortunately, this currently takes place in a suboptimal environment: a narrow outdoor space where the sun's heat becomes uncomfortable in the late morning hours. The covered space will provide a safe and comfortable area where clients can participate in various activities, such as gardening and other therapeutic pursuits, under supervision. The space will contribute to their development and enable a meaningful daily routine focused on both their emotional and physical well-being.

Music therapy plays a special role in the lives of people with disabilities, as it regulates emotions, promotes communication skills, and stimulates social interaction. With the construction of a Music Hall, the SGR Group aims to create an inclusive space where clients can experience music, play instruments, and participate in group sessions guided by a music therapist. The space will be equipped with sound insulation and a wide selection of musical instruments tailored to the needs of the clients. The Music Hall will serve as a place for expression, relaxation, and growth, also contributing to their overall well-being.
