WILLEMSTAD – Utility company Aqualectra has been awarded a substantial subsidy from the Dutch government under the SDE++ program to accelerate Curaçao’s energy transition. The funding, which Aqualectra says is close to the requested €70 million, was confirmed in a company press release.
With this financial support, Aqualectra aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, boost renewable energy production, and enhance the stability of the island’s power grid.
“Key projects include the expansion of green energy production and the installation of a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to ensure a more stable electricity supply on the island,” the company stated.
The initiative is part of Aqualectra’s broader goal to increase the share of renewable energy in Curaçao’s electricity mix from 50 percent today to 70 percent by 2027. In addition, the investment is expected to help stabilize electricity tariffs and reduce the island’s exposure to volatile international fuel prices.
According to Chief Financial Officer Neysa Isenia, the subsidy reflects the Dutch government’s confidence in Aqualectra’s strategy and underscores the shared commitment to building a sustainable future for Curaçao.
