THE HAGUE - VVD Member of Parliament André Bosman presented his controversial initiative proposal to make it easier for the Netherlands to end the kingdom relation with Curaçao, Aruba, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba to the Lower House for treatment.

Bosman wants to amend both the Statute and the Constitution by means of a Kingdom Act, which lowers the threshold to the exit of the Kingdom for the islands. The most remarkable part of his proposal, which has been greeted with suspicion, is to make it possible for politicians in Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten to decide independence without first having to consult the population through a referendum. The requirement that at least a two-thirds majority is needed in Parliament will also be canceled if it is due to Bosman. Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba are 'placed back' in the Charter so that it is easier for these islands to turn their backs on the Netherlands.

In the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom there have been mainly negative reactions to the initiative of the VVD Member of Parliament, but also in Belgium, there seems to be little support for the bill. Because it is a national law, all four parliaments get the opportunity to comment on the draft in writing, insofar as there is a need to it.
