Community Mourns Victim of Saliña Shooting Identified as Shelley Litzel Rodriguez Liriano

WILLEMSTAD - Friends and family gathered Sunday evening to lay flowers and pay tribute at the site of last week’s fatal shooting in Saliña. On Monday, police officially confirmed the identity of the victim as 32-year-old Shelley Litzel Rodriguez Liriano, who was born in the Dominican Republic.

Rodriguez Liriano was shot and killed Thursday evening beside her car on Kaya C. Winkel, near Lucky Cosmetics. According to police, she was murdered by her former partner, and the case is being investigated as murder or manslaughter, classified as a case of femicide — the killing of a woman by an intimate partner.

The 36-year-old suspect was located on Saturday in San Pedro. As officers moved in to arrest him, he shot himself in the head. He was transported in critical condition to the Curaçao Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the shooting and the suspect’s death, seeking to piece together the full timeline of events.

The murder has deeply shaken the community, with relatives, friends, and neighbors expressing grief and outrage over the loss of a young woman whose life was taken by domestic violence. The incident has also renewed public calls for stronger measures to protect women from gender-based violence on the island.
