WILLEMSTAD – The court in Curaçao will deliver its verdict in the high-profile Themis case against Urvin “Nuto” Wawoe on Tuesday, September 23, at 8:30 a.m. local time (2:30 p.m. in the Netherlands). The ruling will be read in the heavily secured courtroom of the Vught Penitentiary Institution in the Netherlands.
The judge and clerks will be physically present in Vught, along with both the prosecution and defense teams. In Curaçao and Sint Maarten, the verdict will be broadcast live via video link.
Wawoe, currently held in the high-security EBI facility in Vught, is the main suspect in the extensive Themis case. He faces charges for fifteen crimes, including assassinations, attempted murders, large-scale drug trafficking, and participation in a criminal organization. The decision to hold the session in Vught is linked to the high security deemed necessary around his case.
Limited public access
Because the courtroom in Vught is located on prison grounds, it is closed to the general public. Only a small number of journalists—maximum eight—will be allowed to attend in person.
For others in the Netherlands, an alternative courtroom has been arranged at the Judicial Complex Schiphol, where the verdict will also be streamed via video. Both visitors and members of the press must register in advance to attend.
On the islands, however, no registration is required. Anyone in Curaçao or Sint Maarten who wishes to follow the proceedings via live connection can join freely.
