WILLEMSTAD – The athletics track at the Ergilio Hato Stadium is in such poor condition that it is causing falls and injuries among athletes, according to the Curaçao Athletics Federation (CAB). The federation is sounding the alarm and demanding the renovation or replacement of the synthetic surface, which was installed in 2012.
CAB’s director has sent two letters in the past month to the government sports authority FDDK addressing the urgent safety concerns, but says no response has yet been received.
It has been known for two years that the track would need to be condemned after reaching the end of its expected 10-year lifespan. In a 2023 report, the federation formally declared the track “unfit and unsafe” for hosting competitions.
Athletes and coaches warn that without immediate action, training and competitive events will continue to carry unnecessary risks, potentially sidelining local talent and jeopardizing Curaçao’s ability to host regional athletics meets.
