Curaçao Expands Fish Aggregating Devices to Boost Local Fishing Industry

WILLEMSTAD – The Ministry of Health, Environment and Nature (GMN) has announced the deployment of six new Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) off the coast of Curaçao and Klein Curaçao, aimed at strengthening the island’s fishing sector.

The floating devices, made up of buoys and ropes designed to attract fish, were produced locally and strategically placed in various locations over the weekend. With this latest installation, a total of twelve FADs are now in operation. The government’s long-term goal is to have 25 in place.

Prime Minister Gilmar “Pik” Pisas (MFK) said the initiative is designed to increase the income of local fishermen while enhancing food security for the island. At the same time, he underscored the importance of proper maintenance and adherence to regulations governing the use of the FADs.

The program, part of a broader effort to modernize and support Curaçao’s fisheries sector, aims to reduce pressure on traditional fishing grounds while providing more consistent and sustainable catches.
